iNomad at the RGS - 23/01/08

The good people at iNomad have their annual event Wednesday 23 January at 7pm - which they hold at the RGS - this coming week and we'd like to note our support of their innovative and inspiring youth programme - Here's exactly what's going on:

We are very pleased to welcome the team from the Offscreen Student Expedition to Oman and the UAE to talk about their experiences breaking down the barriers of misunderstanding between the Middle East and the UK. We are delighted that Offscreen have also invited Sheikh Khalfan to come from Oman to give his perspective on the issue.

Liz Jackson, iNOMAD Award winner, will be showcasing her new work on communicating the wonder of glaciers.

Tickets are £10 in advance and £15 on the door, with all proceeds going to the iNOMAD Award.

Now, just in case you're wondering what the iNomad Award mentioned above is:

The award supports an expedition or project that seeks to bring greater understanding to a cultural or environmental issue creatively. iNOMAD makes one Award of £1,000 each year and also offers support and contacts to help make the project a success. The award winner is also invited to speak at the annual iNOMAD Event, held at the Royal Geographical Society.

We are looking for applications from individuals (not teams) working on expeditions and projects who are based in the UK and who are under 30.

Jay Griffiths Lecture 19th February 2008

The Worlds Monument Fund Britain are hosting a lecture at the Royal Geographical Society in London on 19th February next year.

We are very excited to have the renowned writer Jay Griffiths speaking for us about her recent book 'Wild: An Elemental Journey'. The book focuses on the time she spent living with indigenous societies across the globe and describes the intimate relationships they have with the natural environment. The book also touches upon how the wilderness is interpreted by differing cultures and religions, and argues that wild land is intrinsic to the health of the human mind

Jay is a popular speaker and author and was a resounding success when she was our guest with the Gaia Foundation earlier this year. Living Energy

Friend of the Foundation and fine artist Annabel Pope launched a solo exhibition on Monday of this week. Entitled "Living Energy", the collection displays a stunning array of images inspired by the natural world.

Fundraising Quiz Night

Friday 12th October Widford Lodge School - Chelmsford 7.30pm

£10 Including Supper

Join us for a fun evening of supper and a quiz in aid of Mabandla village school. This school, in dire need of rebuilding, is part of the Zulu community visited by many of our UK trailists who spend up to a week as part of a cultural and environmental experience. Future groups (adults and students) will be involved in the rebuilding programme as part of their volunteer commitments.

Reflect the Rainbow

The Wilderness Foundation is pleased to bring you news of a new exhibition being staged by our friends at Fillingdon:

"Reflect the Rainbow" an exhibition of contemporary art and craft from Kenya, Swaziland, Zimbabwe & South Africa opened last weekend and runs until Sunday 24th June 2007.

Comments from the last show include, "inspiring"; "magic", stunningly beautiful", "fab" and "wonderful as always" and we hope this year is better than ever!

The exhibition is dedicated to Mary Stewart, founding artist and personal friend, who sadly died of cancer in January this year. As a special tribute, we have her entire collection of printed work on display and sale.

We are also supporting Homes in Zimbabwe, the UK charity which helps repair & maintain the old peoples homes in Zimbabwe as well as source food for the pensioners.
